After a long time I am here again to ask you:
Do you know what your children are watching?
One week ago I went with my family to watch the movie The Star where the story about the first Christmas takes place, the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ, through the eyes of the animals. I recommend it.
But before that we watched the trailers of the next movies coming out soon. And Hotel Transylvania 3, coming out in Summer 2018, was one of them and I want to talk about it.
Trailers show just a few little parts of the movie, so we can have an idea what the movie is about. Because of that I don’t know much about this movie. But what I watched in that very fast moment was enough for me to felt impelled to write.
The movie takes place on a cruise and a moment a men, senior, pass by three ladies and he was wearing a small tight swimmimg trunks and the ladies were staring at his back and one of them said “yummy”.
You can see the scene at minute 0:01:09
This scene should be funny and I am sure many people are going to laugh about it, but I didn’t laugh. I don’t think it was funny. I think was inapropriate specially for children.
Many will disagree with me and it is ok. Each one is entitled to their own.
We are living in a moment in western society when there is a a lot of talk about sexual harassment and sexual assault and when so many reports are popping up all the time in Hollywood and now in the news media and political world as well. And we have a movie for children showing them how to sexually harass someone next to you.
But you can say to me:
“But it was just a scene! Not a big deal.”
Well, I hope so…
But this is where the danger is. The strategy is exactly this one: in an “innocent” movie with no intentions, they throw ideias here and there like no one is watching, showing or suggesting one or two inapropriate situations as something funny and with no major consequences.
Exactly in this way this early sexualization agenda for children and adolescents comes to our homes, in little things, little ideas, subtle, disguised.
And you can also argue:
“But were women harassing a men, not the opposite.”
So is it just wrong when men harass a woman?
Be careful! It is too dangerous to relativize right and wrong, especially when we are teaching those little minds in development.
Can you imagine your son or daughter at school staring at the back of some friend that is passing and then saying “yummy”? Your child will be in trouble for sure.
So why do they put this scene in a movie for children?
For me this just reveals all the hypocrisy of movie producers.
My friends, we are living in difficult times and we have to take care of our children.
Our children are gifts from our Lord. We are stewards of their lives.
“Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from him.” Psalms 127:3 (NLT)
Our children are our responsibility. Not the responsibility of their grandparents, uncles and aunts, school, church or TV.
“Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it.” Proverbs 22:6 (NLT)
We should be attentive about what their little eyes are watching and about what is feeding the minds and hearts of our children.
“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” Proverbs 4:23 (NLT)
“Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.” Psalms 119:105 (NLT)
In our home we been used the christian site Movie Guide http://www.movieguide.org. It is excellent !
